Chajchas - Large (Bolivia)
18cm x 4cm
The Chajchas is a small percussion instrument of the rattle family, typically
made from goat or sheep clogs, and native to the central Andes. The instrument is used
in traditional rituals and ceremonies, and can also be heard in much of the
folklore of the region, especially the countries of Bolivia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador and
Colombia. It consists of a number of dried hooves (which can also come from llamas or
alpaca) on a piece of colored fabric, which allows the instrument to be worn like a bracelet around the
wrist or ankle. They are usually played by two and can be used in dances
ceremonial.
