The Caxixi (pronounced Ca-chi-chi) is a percussion instrument consisting of a closed basket shaped
bell, flat-bottomed, containing seeds or other small elements.
It is an idiophone, like the maracas, used in the same way: by shaking it. The natives
believe that caxixi attracts beneficial spirits and drives out bad ones.
In the music of capoeira, the caxixi is played at the same time as the berimbau. In Africa
in the west, it is used by singers, often at the same time as drums.
